Janet Craig / Dracaena deremensis

499.00

Common houseplant that survives outside in only the warmest climates.  It thrives in lower light level situations, direct sun can burn the foliage.  If light levels are too low leaves will narrow.   Produces lush green and yellow or white striped foliage.  Works well in a potting soil for tropical plants.  Soil should dry out slightly between watering.  Place a saucer beneath the plant to collect water and then discard any that accumulates. Leaves can turn brown at the tips if indoor humidity is too low.  Mist the leaves to prevent this especially in the winter when the heat is on.  Keep temperature above 50 degrees F if possible.  They thrive in temperatures of 70-80 degrees F.  They root readily from tip cuttings. Toxic to dogs and cats.

Growing Conditions

Light: Low light is fine, but they like it a little brighter. New leaves will narrow if there isn’t enough light.

Water: Keep evenly moist, although if you have to err, do so on the dry side. (But keeping it too dry will result in brown leaf tips.) Use non-fluoridated water as they are sensitive to fluoride.

Temperature: Keep above 50ºF if possible. They do best in the mid-70ºs to low 80ºs.

Soil: Loose, well-drained potting mix.

Fertilizer: During growing, fertilize with slow-release fertilizer or use a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer at half-strength every month.

Propagation

They root readily from cuttings. Push tip cuttings into warm soil and keep moist. They will usually root readily without the use of rooting hormone. They should root within a month.

Repotting

Repot annually into larger pots with fresh, free-draining potting soil.
